How to measure your room

Six parts, in the same order as the measuring flow. Write everything in inches; fractions to the nearest sixteenth are fine.

Measure the critical dimensions with a tape measure or a laser. Phone scans and photos are useful for context, but they aren't accurate enough to build cabinets from, so we never take dimensions from them.

Before you start

  • Use a 25-foot tape measure or a laser measure. Hook the tape on the wall, not the baseboard.
  • Sketch the room from above and give each wall a letter, A, B, C, going clockwise.
  • Measure everything from the left corner of each wall as you face it.
  • If you're replacing cabinets, measure the walls, not the old cabinets.

Ceiling height

Measure from the finished floor to the ceiling where the cabinets will go. Floors and ceilings are rarely flat, so measure at each end of the run and use the smallest number.

Most ceilings are between 96" (8 feet) and 120". If yours is outside 84"–144", the flow will ask you to double-check it.

96 1/4"96 3/8"ceilingfloor
Measure in two or three places. Use the smallest number.

Each wall, at three heights

For every wall that gets cabinets, measure corner to corner at three heights:

  1. Near the floor, just above the baseboard
  2. At counter height, 36" up
  3. Near the top of where wall cabinets go, 84" up

Walls are seldom perfectly straight or square. If the three numbers differ by more than 1/2", the flow asks you to measure again. If they still differ, that's real information: we design around the shortest length.

120 1/16" at 84"120 1/8" at 36"120" near floorcornercorner
Corner to corner, at three heights. Differences over 1/2" get flagged.

Windows and doors

For each window, door or open doorway on a cabinet wall, record:

  • Distance from the wall's left corner to the edge of the trim
  • Width and height, outside of trim to outside of trim
  • For windows, the sill height: floor to the top of the sill

The flow checks that each opening fits on its wall, doesn't overlap another, and isn't taller than the ceiling.

from left 30"36"48"sill 40"
Position, width, height, and for windows the sill height.

Plumbing, outlets, gas and vents

Find the center of each of these and measure its distance from the left corner and its height from the floor:

  • Water supply lines and the drain
  • Electrical outlets and switches
  • Gas line
  • Range hood or dryer vent

These decide where sink bases, appliances and cutouts go, so it's worth getting them right.

48"18"from left 92"44"
Locate each one by distance from the left corner and height from the floor.

Photos and scans

Take a photo of each wall straight on, plus a couple of the whole room. If your phone can make a LiDAR room scan, upload that too (USDZ, OBJ, PLY or GLB). We use these to understand the space, spot things like soffits and pipes, and check your sketch.

They don't replace your tape measurements. Before you submit, you'll confirm that the critical dimensions were measured with a tape or laser.

Ready when you are

The flow saves as you go, so you can measure one wall tonight and finish tomorrow.
